Solar Water Centers

How a Solar Water Center is Transforming Lives in Pakistan

Pakistan is facing a severe water crisis, with millions of people lacking access to safe and reliable water sources. According to the United Nations, Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, and is expected to face absolute water scarcity by 2025. The lack of clean water has devastating consequences for the health, education, and livelihoods of the people, especially in rural and remote areas.

That’s why we at the Paani Project are committed to providing sustainable solutions to the water crisis in Pakistan. Paani Project is a nonprofit organization founded by four University of Michigan students in 2017, with the vision of empowering communities through water, education, and advocacy. One of our flagship initiatives is to build solar water centers, which are solar-powered plants that provide clean water and electricity to entire communities5.

A solar water center is a specially designed project that harnesses the power of the sun to pump water from underground sources, filter it through reverse osmosis, and store it in a large tank. The solar water center also generates electricity that can be used to power schools, mosques, and homes in the area. Each solar water center can provide up to 1,000 people and 1,000 livestock with fresh, clean water every day, eliminating the threat of waterborne diseases that come with drinking contaminated water.

We have already built several solar water centers in different regions of Pakistan, such as Tharparkar, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, benefiting thousands of people who previously had to walk miles to fetch water or rely on unsafe sources. Our solar water centers are not only providing water and electricity, but also improving the quality of life and dignity of the people. They are creating opportunities for education, health, agriculture, and economic development in the communities.

We are grateful for the generous support of our donors and partners, who have made our work possible. Recently, NBA superstar Kyrie Irving’s KAI Family Foundation donated to the Paani Project to fund a solar water center in Tharparkar, one of the hottest and driest regions in Pakistan. His donation will help us bring clean water and electricity to over 1,000 people who desperately need it. We are honored and humbled by his kindness and generosity.

You can also make a difference by supporting our cause. It costs $15,000 to build an entire solar water center that reaches more than 4,000 villagers. Every single dollar goes directly to the project, as we take no money for overhead or administration. You can donate online through our website, or by mail or phone. You can also sponsor a solar water center in your name or in honor of a loved one. Your contribution will help us transform lives in Pakistan through the power of the sun.
